Soon after the Genocide against Tutsi in the 1994, Butare Diocese has been supporting many children from poor families and orphans in their education in secondary schools. The provided support consists of school fees and student materials through different diocesan supporting programmes like PAFO Programme d’Assistance aux Familles et aux Orphelins) in partnership with German partners, since 1996 to date, and Raise of Hope in partnership with Church friends from a Sister Church in England. From its beginning till today, PAFO supports 200 children every year, that means more than 4,400 children were supported up to this year 2018. The support changed lives of those children, and their respective families, making an impact on communities.

Likewise, the Diocese supports other children from poor families and orphans, and this is done from nursery, primary and University through its projects implemented in partnership with Compassion

International in Rwanda. More than 2,000 children have been supported in seven projects and the Diocese expects to increase this number progressively.

Moreover, the Diocese has been making efforts in finding scholarship at high level for developing capacity for Leaders of various Church Ministry sectors; up to date many have been supported to study either in Rwanda or abroad for Master and PHD levels, and this is ongoing process.

To coordinate all the above activities, the diocesan Leadership has established an Education and Youth coordination department.
